Sound recording (and subsequently sound design) is an integral part of my filmmaking process. Here are a few sounds from along the way.

Sony A10 + LOM mikroUši + earbuds
A quality but very compact and lightweight kit for recoding ambiences. I always have this in the bag. Great for any shoot or expedition where space and weight are a factor. Not suited for windy situations, even with ‘windbubbles’. In the past I used the cult-fav PCMD100 for a lightweight and compact option, and still do sometimes, but this kit has largely displaced the D100 for me. Typically with this kit I use a pair of Sennheiser noise-blocking earbuds, rather than my standard MDR-7506 headphones.
Sound Devices 702
Chunky, reliable, and wonderful recorder. Use for interviews, ambiences, or recording foley with.
Mid/Side kit: MKH8040 + MKH30
For capturing film-friendly ambiences that aren’t as ‘wide’ sounding as ORTF. I decode in the SD702 recorder and bake the stereo image in during the recording. Some would say this defeats the purpose of mid-side, but I like fine tuning the stereo image in the moment and not having to deal with it in post. Housed in a Rycote blimp with optional dead cat for windy situations.
MKH 8040 matched pair configured in ORTF
Very high quality kit for recording ambiences in a wide, immersive sounding stereo image. Housed in a Rycote blimp with optional dead cat for windy situations.
DPA 4060 + Zaxcom ZMT-3x + Zaxcom RX200
Lav kit for documentary situations. ZMT-3x allows for a simultaneous internal recording while sending a signal to the receiver on-camera. Very helpful when shooting on my own in verité situations.
DPA 4017c or Rode Stereo VideoMic X
On camera microphones. DPA: a small, light and very transparent shotgun microphone. Rode: a discontinued XY pattern stereo microphone — used with low profile Cable Techniques TA3F to XLR to keep things compact and clean.
MKH50
Indoor dialog and interview microphone (boomed).
