Here is a new cover (though actually kind of an old photo) from my friends at Aka Skidor in Sweden. 5th cover with them, they have been quite good to me – thanks Tobias and Örjan!

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011Here is a Tourism Whistler commercial that features some of my images [animated still photos]. The first 15 seconds worth of images, and the last image are ones that I took during Deep Winter Photo Challenge contests in years past and other ski days around Whistler and Blackcomb.

SBC Skier, cover
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010Very pleased to see this image on the new cover of Skier’s Buyers Guide issue. Chad (Sayers) and I took this image during Whistler Blackcomb’s Deep Winter Photo Challenge this past January. It was shot as a horizontal, but cropped to make a vertical for the cover. Most of the time I try to use natural light when shooting, but sometimes a little artificial light can make all the difference, as it did with this shot. John Irvine from Arcteryx (a machine on a bike, and an avid photographer himself) helped out with the lighting on this one, so thanks to John.
Deep Winter Photo Challenge
Sunday, January 10th, 20102010 marked the 5th Annual Deep Winter Photo Challenge, and the 3rd time I competed in it. The competition format is comprised of 3 shooting days, where 5 photographer-athlete teams shoot on Whistler Blackcomb during operation hours, in-bounds (for the most part), and around the village any time. On the 4th day each team presents a slideshow in front of a 1000 strong crowd and a panel of 5 judges. It is always interesting to see how with the exact same conditions and time frame, the different teams produce completely different results. The last two years, my team was voted top spot, and this year, after working hard for three days my team mates (Dave Short and Chad Sayers) and I were voted top spot again. We tried to get creative as possible – climbing trees, rappelling down cliffs, amongst other things in order to get unique perspectives.
A huge thanks to Dave Short and Chad Sayers for their creative vision and hard work in front of the camera, and to John and Ange as well. I’ll post some behind the scenes footage in the coming weeks from some of the more interesting setups.

Thursday, April 30th, 2009Thursday night was a bit of a dream come true for me. Five or so years ago, as an audience member at the yearly Pro Photographer Showdown, I realized one day I wanted to be part of the show, and try to win. The work of people like Sterling Lorence, Paul Morrison, and Blake Jorgenson inspired me to refine my craft and develop a creative vision.
Finally this year I decided to enter, and ended up being a finalist with a truly stacked competitive field. Ian Ruhter, Daniel Blom, Christian Pondella, and Scott Pommier all had amazing shows that inspired everyone in the room.
I was a nervous wreck, as I usually am at these events, despite it having been the 5th slideshow I’ve done in the past year. I sat on the floor in the back as my show played. To my surprise, the audience gave me a standing ovation (it may have been partial) after the show had faded to black – it was simply overwhelming. I suppose the judges agreed, and I was presented with the prize for the winning show ($10,000, no small sum!).
As I said up on stage, I owe a huge thanks to all my friends who are the subjects of my photographs and put up patiently with me.
