Haines, Alaska

The morning after the Pro Photographer Showdown, the influential and remarkable big mountain skier Ingrid Backstrom called me to go to Alaska for a last minute effort to try and get some material for her ski film segment this year, and for some additional photos. I jumped at the opportunity and before I knew it I was on a plane to Whitehorse where we rented an RV and drove to Haines, Alaska. Kye Peterson, Rory Bushfield, and Eric Crossland were part of the team as well, and I was greatful to be a part of it.

This was my first experience in Alaska. After graduating highschool I spent a couple summers working in the Yukon doing mineral exploration and fell in love with the North, but had never made it over into Alaska. Snow conditions were variable and finding good snow was aspect dependant, but we did find (in small doses) what we were looking for. Steep line skiing in Alaska has been photographed a million times, but to me everything was new and exciting. Shooting out of the helicopter for the first time – with the doors off, strapped in circling overhead the skier charging down the line left me giddy and wanting more.

The trip was ultimately cut short due to rising temps but it was long enough to leave knowing I had experienced a truly amazing place where I plan to return to hopefully sooner than later.

Thursday night was a bit of a dream come true for me. Five or so years ago, as an audience member at the yearly Pro Photographer Showdown, I realized one day I wanted to be part of the show, and try to win. The work of people like Sterling Lorence, Paul Morrison, and Blake Jorgenson inspired me to refine my craft and develop a creative vision.

Finally this year I decided to enter, and ended up being a finalist with a truly stacked competitive field. Ian Ruhter, Daniel Blom, Christian Pondella, and Scott Pommier all had amazing shows that inspired everyone in the room.

I was a nervous wreck, as I usually am at these events, despite it having been the 5th slideshow I’ve done in the past year. I sat on the floor in the back as my show played. To my surprise, the audience gave me a standing ovation (it may have been partial) after the show had faded to black – it was simply overwhelming. I suppose the judges agreed, and I was presented with the prize for the winning show ($10,000, no small sum!).

As I said up on stage, I owe a huge thanks to all my friends who are the subjects of my photographs and put up patiently with me.

Photo above: Just after they handed a cheque to me and my great friends Jamie and Andre blitzed the stage armed with champagne. Mike Crane photos.

Duffey Lake Road – Mt Matier

20090418_matier_012

This weekend under tranquil skies and rising temperatures, we journied up the Duffey Lake road and ski toured/climbed the highest peak in the area, Mt. Matier, standing at just over 9,000ft. My partner’s and I skied it’s legendary NW face, fast, and then down the Anniversary Glacier back to the road. All in, a 5000 vertical ft descent, punctuated by cold beers waiting for us in the snow bank when we reached the road.

For their pre-festival issue, Whistler’s weekly Pique put a photo that my brother Les and friend Jonny Law took together during last year’s Deep Winter Photo Challenge on the cover.  This image has been used in a few editorial spots over the past year.

Spring is in the air which means one thing: ski touring season. The past four days I spent most of my time touring off behind Blackcomb, where it’s emmense backcountry scape provides snow sliders plenty of room to find their own turns.

Chad Sayers, a great friend of mine and very talented athlete has come to know the long road of rehabilitation after several bad injuries. A broken femur 3 years ago still leaves him with major muscle problems and constant pain when skiing. He spends a lot of time in physio – we decided to document of one of his physio regiments, IMS, where long thin needles go into the muscle and re-configure the neurology of the muscle.

Pro Photographer Showdown – Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Whistler has held the WSSF for a what seems like quite a few years now. The diversity in music, spring skiing and competition, and arts events have become part of the fabric of a complete Whistler ski season. I remember attending the Pro Photographer Showdown for the first time when I was starting out and trying to become a little more “serious” about taking action photographs. I drove up to Whistler in my dad’s sedan and watched the shows, slept in the car that night and envisioned someday entering the contest. That time has come and I am humbled by my competition this year – it promises to be an inspiring evening.

For the past week I have been working on my show, dialing in my Final Cut skills. After years of using the program, I feel like I have finally figured out what works for slideshows and what does not.

Winter road revisited

20081108_drake_035

My 2008/09 winter began in Antarctica, what is actually it’s spring. I was accompanied by Chris Davenport, a steep skiing living day legend and all-round nice guy, and a host of other unbelievably talented ski mountaineers; humbling. The trip didn’t pan out like it should have due to a major mechanical issue with the boat that was to take us there, but Anatarctica is a place I know I will return to someday, it has left a mark on me. The amount of mammalian life that flourishes in such a hostile environment is mind blowing, and it all depends on one species – Krill! Mind boggling too is the glaciation, as you can imagine.

I arrived back in Vancouver/Whistler late November, but winter had not done the same. Fortunately the snow began to fall just in time for the Deep Winter Photo Challenge at Whistler Blackcomb. This year I was joined by my good friends Chad Sayers and Dave Short. We worked hard and were awarded first place again this year.

Chad and I and our friend Tobin then headed to Europe to go find winter and experience a special place called La Grave. We did some of the best skiing of  of our lives there. Followed by that was a trip to the Montarosa massif in Italy. It was unforgettably deep.

I did two weeks of Catskiing with Dave Treadway in the Kootenays when I returned to Canada. Somewhere in the middle we fit in the Cold Smoke Cold Shot Face Off which is a photo contest format. We shot for 4 days touring around the Kootenays and had a blast with our friend Pete Velisek. The judges awarded us first place overall, although, after seeing the shows that Kari Medig and Steve Ogle had to offer the judges had their work cut out for them.

At the beginning of March Chad Sayers, Dan Kostrzewski and I headed up to Smithers and Terrace for Powder magazine assignment. It was an exploration of the ski terrain and ski culture both towns have to offer, and an interesting look into the difficulties that northern communities endure in order to sustain even a simple ski operation.

And then winter returned to Whistler. Finally. I spent 8 days almost fully away from the camera, skiing at the resort and up on the Hurley Pass at Backcountry Snowcats. Check out a video from our weekend there.

New site

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Greetings.

My brand new web portfolio [ www.jordanmanley.com ] has just launched. Over the past year and a half I was fortunate enough to experience many new places from Central America, to South America all the way to Antarctica, and across the pond to the European Alps. I met many people along the way and made great new friends. My porfolio has subsequently broadened and I have experimented with different brands of photography during this process, of which my new site the showcase. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks to my friend Marlowe for getting the site up and running, www.brocktonpoint.com
